History of Statewide Products, Inc.
In October of 1968, with one van and their garage full of cookies, Statewide Products was established by Joe and Penny Smith. Penny handled the bookkeeping side of the business and Joe solicited customers and delivered products to the stores. They were the first distributor of Pepperidge Farm products in the state of New Mexico. As the business grew, new products were added and soon the company was large enough to move out of the garage and hire an additional salesperson. Two routes grew to three, and so on. Soon, the company was a fill fledged, specialty foods distributor representing national product lines such as Stella D’Oro, Bigelow Tea, Estee Dietetic, Kame’, China Bowl, Manischevitz, and more.
With growth has come change. As large Master Distributors entered the market in the 1980’s many of the national lines the company started with were brought in from out of state. We sought alternative product lines and soon began to represent local products. The first was Sadie’s and later Cannon and El Pinto. When these local companies decided to market their salsa and chile products to the grocery stores, Statewide Products took them under our wing and built their distribution. We were so successful with DSD sales of Sadie’s and El Pinto these brands were able to take the next step to direct distribution and expansion throughout the US. We are proud to have been the avenue for their success. Statewide has worked diligently to develop local product sections in most major accounts. Today there are over 150 manufacturers of NM items from Chile & Salsa to Popcorn, Nuts, Coffee and more. We currently represent many restaurant brands such as Garcia’s, Los Cuates, Monroe’s,
Cervantes, and El Pinto. We also have a variety of excellent salsas and chile sauces from 505 Southwest, Cibolo Junction, Bueno, Chile Grande, Gilly Loco, Jillipepper, NM Salsa, Hurricanes, and Mick’s Chile Fix. Our local products also include New Mexico Pinon Coffee, Rio Grande Snacks Pistachios, Cibolo Junction Spices & Mixes, Valencia Mills, Popcorn Cannery and more.
What goes better with salsa than chips? As master distributors moved into the NM marketplace, Statewide Products evolved into snack food distribution. Statewide Products has become the largest non-Frito Lay salty food snack distributor in NM. We represent lines such as Snyder’s Pretzels, Poore Brothers, Kettle Chips, Boulder Natural, Clover Club, Mac’s, El Sabroso, On the Border and more. We also represent all major and a several local Jerky brands, Blue Sky beverages, Archway, Lance & Stella d’Oro. These areas of the business have grown so much that in 2007 Joe sold the Pepperidge Farm routes so we could streamline the business. We are constantly looking at new lines as we strive to meet consumer demand and adapt to the ever changing needs of the grocery industry.
49 years later, we are proud to still be a family business. Our objective is to remain a solid local company that provides good quality service to our customers, fine representation to our manufactures and secure employment to our employees. Joe and Penny’s daughter, Debi joined the company in 1986. Debi’s husband Pat came on board in 1998. Sadly, Penny passed away in 2003. We miss her dearly! She taught us the importance of integrity and persistence in both business and life.
Our operation today consists of: Central warehouse located in Albuquerque, NM from which we run 9 local routes covering Albuquerque, Santa Fe area, Socorro and Belen. -El Paso area warehouse runs 5 routes. -We have Independent Operators in the outlying areas.
